Open Archive

Direction for a cultural collection treating documentation as a living resource — ordered, captioned and built to keep expanding.

Archive wall layered with aged printed pages

Overview

Collections deteriorate when they become mere storage. Here the archive is handled as an editorial artefact: each addition is framed, captioned and sequenced so later readers receive background, not just files.

The studio set the underlying picture logic — capture, crop, caption and grouping conventions — plus the cadence that lets fresh and historic material sit comfortably side by side.

  • Capture logic and caption conventions
  • Sequencing for print and digital editions
  • Standing guidance for future additions

Challenge

Memory needs structure

The organisation owned years of remarkable material with no common presentation. Formats fought, captions disagreed and fine work vanished into folders.

The work began from the reader's first half-minute: what must a newcomer grasp immediately? That answer fixed the hierarchy — lead pictures, supporting runs, then deeper background.

“Our history finally reads as a single narrative. The collection now works as hard as the programme itself.”
