Pictures never arrive cleanly. Each one enters a crowded visual moment, dense with prior references — and a director's task is to recognise which of those references the audience already carries with them.

Reading the room

Before premise work starts, the studio surveys the surrounding image climate: what viewers have absorbed, what feels depleted, what retains energy. Work that disregards that climate risks echoing it; work that studies it can reply with intent.

“Freshness is seldom pure invention. Usually it is an exact reply to what preceded it.”

Shared signals

The gestures, framings and palettes a culture already comprehends are simply another material. Projects such as Shared Signals adopt that existing vocabulary as a foundation, then bend it somewhere unfamiliar.

Engagement with the wider image world is unavoidable. The only choice is whether it happens by design or by accident.
